D-STAR ID-1 Configuration

This page outlines the steps you need to take to configure your ID-1 radio to connect it to the internet via D-STAR.

First, you will need to make sure your radio is registered to use the D-STAR Gateway. The process is basically the same as registering any radio for use on the D-STAR system. Those steps are outlined on the D-STAR Registration Page.

If you already have a radio registered in your account, and you are adding an ID-1, you will need to distinguish it from your other radio. This is done by filling in something in the "Initial" box when you register your ID-1. A good choice is to put a "D" in there (for Digital, of course). Just remember to put the D in your "MYCALL" of your ID-1 as well, ie "VE7BCB D", note that the Initial has to be in the eighth position of the callsign field.

When you register your ID-1, also make note of the IP address that is associated to that entry (10.xxx.xxx.xxx). You will need that IP address in your laptop/computer in order to connect to the internet.

Think of the ID-1 as a wireless piece of CAT5 network cable that connects to the router/gateway server on the mountain. When you plug the network cable from your ID-1 into your computer, you are effectively plugging it into the router up on the mountain. Like in your home network, every computer needs an IP address. Your ID-1 does not use the IP address, your computer does. BUT, your ID-1 needs to know which router to talk to over the air, and that is accomplished with the frequency and callsigns programmed into it.

First, configure your ID-1 with all the settings to talk to VE7RAG. You can either do this off the keypad, or use the user software on your computer (via USB) and change the settings in your radio that way (easier).

The radio settings to talk to the internet gateway on the mountain are:

URCALL = "VE7RAG "
RPT1 = "VE7RAG A"
RPT2 = "VE7RAG G"
MYCALL = "your callsign, as registered on the gateway, with initial if required"
Freq = "1251.940MHz"
Duplex = "RPS"
TX Inh = "OFF (green light OFF if using Software Control)"

Plug in the ethernet cable from the ID-1 to the network card on your computer (a "straight-through" Cat5 cable).

Open the "Local Area Connection Properties" for the adapter, click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", and click "Properties":

In the TCP/IP properties box for the adapter, you will want to enter the following:

IP Address = "the 10.xxx.xxx.xxx IP from the D-STAR Gateway Server for your radio"
Netmask = "255.0.0.0"
Gateway = "10.0.0.1"
DNs Server = "10.0.0.1"

Click "OK" on the TCP/IP properties box, and "OK" on the Local Area Connection Properties box. This will change your adapter's address to a static IP on the D-STAR network.

Now, if you open your internet browser, you should be able to surf to Google or another internet site!
